The #NextGenMD's will need to possess a multitude of knowledge, experience and an expanded skillset. Leadership, soft skills, technological and healthcare system fluency will be critical.
Discovery
Research shows that medical students who grow up in small, rural communities are much more likely to return to them to practice. (AAFP) Partnering with educational institutions and community health partners to identify candidates and provide support through undergrad and med school application process, will increase the chances they will come back to the community to practice.
#NextGenMD’s will need to come from a variety of diverse backgrounds and possess a multitude of knowledge, experience and an expanded set of skills than those of today.
They will be the people you grew up with, the guy next door, and the kid from your soccer team. They will be leaders and mentors in their communities, something that seems to be lost during healthcare specialization.

AAMC Projects Physician Shortage of 124,000 by 2034
A recent report published by the Association of American Medical Colleges is projecting a shortage of about 124,000 physicians nationwide across the U.S. healthcare system by the year 2034.
The Path to the NextGenMD
The path to the NextGenMD is not simple. It won't be quick and it won't be easy, but as long as you know what to expect, are determined and dedicated, and have put a plan in place to #setyourselfupforsuccess you will have a much better chance of reaching the finish line!
The Private Sector Can Help
Demand for doctors is far outstripping supply. The United States will face a shortage of up to 124,000 physicians by 2034, according to projections out this month from the Association of American Medical Colleges. According to Forbes, private interests, especially those with an interest in improving access to health care, should consider how they can help narrow the doctor shortage.

The US is facing a severe shortage of doctors. This will not only impact ourselves, but our loved ones, as well. It takes between 7 and 15 years of training before a physician is able to practice. Rural areas will be impacted the most. We must act now!
